Mental Health Medication Management in Pittsburgh
Thoughtful, evidence-based medication care from board-certified prescribers who take the time to truly understand your situation.
For many people, medication is a meaningful part of mental health care. It can quiet the noise enough to make therapy more effective. It can restore a baseline of stability that felt out of reach. It can make the difference between getting through the day and actually living it.
At Weingarden Psychological Services, medication management is provided by our team of board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs). PMHNPs are advanced practice nurses with specialized training in mental health medication evaluation, prescribing, and ongoing management. They are fully qualified prescribers and a trusted, widely recognized standard of care for mental health medication services.
We take a thoughtful, person-first approach: understanding your history, your goals, your concerns, and what has or has not worked before. Medication decisions are made with you, not just for you.
To reach our medication team directly, call 412-235-3075 or request an appointment online.

What to Expect from Medication Management at WPS
Your First Appointment: A Thorough Evaluation Your initial appointment is not a quick check-in. It is a comprehensive evaluation. Your PMHNP will take time to understand your mental health history, your current symptoms, any medications you have tried before, and your overall health picture. This is the foundation for everything that follows.
Building Your Medication Plan Based on the evaluation, your PMHNP will discuss medication options with you, explain the reasoning behind any recommendations, and answer your questions. If medication is appropriate, your prescriber will work with you to identify the right starting point and monitor how you respond. Adjustments are made as needed over time.
Ongoing Management and Follow-Up Medication management is not a one-time appointment. Your PMHNP will see you for regular follow-up visits to review how the medication is working, address any side effects or concerns, and adjust the plan as your needs evolve. We are here for the long term, not just the initial prescription.
Coordination with Your Therapist If you are also working with a therapist at WPS, your medication and therapy care can be coordinated within the practice. Many clients find that therapy and medication together produce better outcomes than either alone, and having both providers at the same practice makes that coordination much easier.

What Is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner?
Many patients are unfamiliar with the PMHNP credential and wonder how it differs from seeing a psychiatrist. Here is a clear, honest explanation.
A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) with graduate-level specialized training in mental health assessment, diagnosis, and treatment, including medication management. PMHNPs are licensed to evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe medications for mental health conditions.
PMHNPs and psychiatrists share many clinical responsibilities, including the ability to prescribe and manage psychiatric medications. The primary difference is in their educational pathway: psychiatrists complete medical school followed by a psychiatry residency, while PMHNPs complete nursing school followed by a graduate program specifically focused on psychiatric practice.
PMHNPs are a standard of care in mental health medication management across the United States, and many patients work exclusively with PMHNPs for their medication needs throughout their care. If you have questions about whether a PMHNP is the right fit for your situation, we encourage you to reach out.

PMHNPs are a trusted and widely recognized standard of care for mental health medication management. If you have questions about this, we are happy to discuss them.
What mental health conditions do you prescribe medication for? Our PMHNPs provide medication management for anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, PTSD, OCD, mood disorders, insomnia, and other mental health conditions. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.
Do I need a referral to see a medication prescriber at WPS? No referral is required. You can request an appointment directly through our website or by calling 412-235-3075.
Can I get mental health medication management via telehealth in Pennsylvania? Yes. We offer secure telehealth medication management appointments for patients throughout Pennsylvania. Telehealth appointments provide the same quality of care as in-person visits.
Do I need to also be in therapy to receive medication management? No. You can receive medication management at WPS without being in therapy here. However, if you are interested in both, having your therapist and prescriber at the same practice allows for coordination of your care, which many patients find beneficial.
What happens at a first medication management appointment? Your first appointment is a comprehensive evaluation. Your PMHNP will review your mental health history, current symptoms, any previous medications, and your overall health. Based on this evaluation, they will discuss options with you and answer your questions. No prescription is automatic. Every decision is made together.
What is the difference between medication management and a psychiatrist? Medication management at WPS is provided by Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs), who are advanced practice nurses with specialized training in mental health medication. Psychiatrists follow a medical school pathway; PMHNPs follow a nursing pathway with graduate-level psychiatric specialization. Both are qualified to prescribe and manage mental health medications. PMHNPs are a standard of care for these services throughout the United States.
