ADHD and Executive Functioning

Medical Tools Overview

WPS offers a specialized treatment track for ADHD and executive functioning and Pittsburgh and virtually in Pennsylvania

ADHD and executive functioning difficulties are both extremely common, but they can present with a wide range of symptoms and can create unique diagnostic and treatment challenges. Difficulties with attention, organization, motivation, memory, emotional regulation, and task initiation can occur with ADHD, but they can also overlap with other conditions and life circumstances, including depression, anxiety, sleep difficulties, and the cognitive and emotional changes associated with menopause.

For this reason, effective treatment begins with understanding what is contributing to the individual's difficulties, rather than assuming that every attention or executive functioning problem is caused by ADHD.

Treatment is individualized and may include, but is not limited to:

  • Diagnostic and symptom-severity evaluation, including differential diagnosis to determine whether symptoms are best explained by ADHD, another condition, multiple contributing factors, or some combination of these.

  • Treatment of co-occurring conditions, such as anxiety or depression, when these are contributing to difficulties with attention, motivation, emotional regulation, or executive functioning. Treatment may include psychiatric medication management and/or psychotherapy.

  • Psychiatric medication management with providers who specialize in ADHD and executive functioning.

  • Nutritional and Functional Psychiatry, including an individualized consideration of factors that may contribute to mental health, cognition, energy, and overall functioning. Learn more about Dr. David Agor's approach to Nutritional and Functional Psychiatry.

  • Executive Functioning Skills Therapy, which can help individuals develop practical strategies for organization, planning, task initiation, time management, and other areas of daily functioning. Learn more about Executive Functioning Skills Therapy with Dr. David Agor.

Our approach recognizes that ADHD and executive functioning difficulties do not look the same in every person. Treatment may therefore involve one or several of these approaches depending on the individual's symptoms, history, goals, and needs.
